2012 i20 SUMMIT

The Institute for Large Scale Innovation (ILSI) held it's i20 Summit on April 25-26 in Abu Dhabi. The 2012 i20 Summit brought together its i20 community, our high level group of national “chief innovation officers”. The i20 has representatives from over 40 countries, of which a majority attended.

Our primary sponsor for the 2012 summit was the Advanced Technology Investment Company of Abu Dhabi (ATIC), which has been a consistent supporter of ILSI and the i20. There was also participation from the Abu Dhabi Education Council, the Technology Development Council and other local stakeholders.

The i20’s 2011 Summit was held in Washington DC, with the support of the White House and the US State Department.

The 2012 summit was an opportunity for participants to:

  • Deepen their understanding of large scale innovation best practices, explore the latest trends in the global innovation agenda and pursue opportunities for collaboration.
  • Explore the innovation agendas of Abu Dhabi and the MENA region, through the active engagement of the Abu Dhabi stakeholder community.
  • Be exposed to a pilot version of the Innovation Cloud, a next generation platform developed by ILSI to support collaboration and innovation for distributed communities of stakeholders.

The Summit continued the i20’s focus on the portfolio of grand challenges faced by societies and the world, but with a particular focus on how digital technology can support foresight, collaboration, innovation and learning in addressing policy needs.

The Summit program was a two-day event. The first day and a half presented speakers from the i20 and Abu Dhabi communities, and engaged participants on large scale innovation best practices and their applicability in the Abu Dhabi context.

The latter half of the second day was the i20’s internal meeting. We considered member updates, forward plans and the unveiling of the Innovation Cloud.  Over the past 12 months, ILSI has made significant progress in developing this collaboration platform as part of its overall strategy to generate tools and practices that enable innovation at a large scale.

The Summit also provided opportunities for the i20 to engage and network directly with leading public and private sector entities in Abu Dhabi.  In addition to the Summit itself, the program included a Gala dinner on the evening of the first day and a tour of Abu Dhabi’s cleantech hub – Masdar City – on the second afternoon.

The Summit was held at the headquarters of the Advanced Technology Investment Company, with accommodation at the 5-star Yas Viceroy Hotel. We look forward to sharing news and media from the i20 Summit in Abu Dhabi soon.
